Free Speech Week at BU

Support Free Speech on campus! Learn about BU's own speech restrictions!

Time and again, we Americans have seen our hallowed freedoms of speech and opinion on trial, on- and off-campus--especially in more recent years. What makes it happen, and why? What is a society without open discourse and the means to persuade and alter opinions? What can we as students do to ensure and protect these freedoms from being stifled by our universities?

Make your mark: Show your support for free speech and opinion and write on the BU Free Speech Wall! As part of a nationwide event, the Free Speech Wall will hang in the front lobby of the GSU from April 1st to April 8th each day! *All* thoughts are welcome.

Just recently, FIRE, an organization for students' rights, released an article included in Huffington Post on the Top 12 Worst Colleges for Free Speech, which you may have seen here:http://huff.to/Hg5Cvc. Among these infamous free-speech offenders included Harvard, Yale and Brandeis.

BU didn't make the list, but our own track record isn't so clean: A speaker from FIRE, who gave a talk here last October, called some of our school's policies "Red Light." BU students who attended the talk were surprised by how many things that a majority of us do everyday are actually restricted. Read the article on the talk written by The Daily Free Press here:http://dailyfreepress.com/2011/10/06/bu-speech-policy-infringes-on-students%E2%80%99-rights-speaker-says/ . These restrictive policies, on Internet usage and elsewhere, arguably stifle our individual creativity and hinder exchange of ideas.

Exercise your rights. Support free speech at BU and across all college campuses!

This event is being held by Liberty at Boston University.
